MANA WAHINE SERIES
Hine Ata

Hine Ata is a daughter of Tama-nui-te-Ra (the Sun) and is known as the morning maiden. She is closely aligned with the star Kopu (Venus), which rises just before dawn — a sacred sign of light returning to the world, and the quiet promise of a new beginning.

In te ao Maori, wahine are understood as Te Whare Tangata — the sacred house of humanity. We are the life-bearers, the vessels through which the spirit of creation flows. Our bodies carry the echo of our ancestors and the breath of future generations. Like the eternal river of time, we move between realms — weaving memory, life, and lineage.

Each new dawn is more than light breaking through the sky. It is a spiritual awakening — a renewal of energy, purpose, and possibility. Te koki — the dawn chorus — lifts this moment into being, a karanga from the natural world that calls us into presence, into remembrance, and into connection with all that is yet to come.

Digital artwork titled 'Hine Ata' featuring a full-bodied silhouette of a wahine Māori (back view) filled with patterns of native New Zealand flora. Birds fly amongst the fauna in the early morning sunrise. The soft internal light contrasts with a black background, evoking spiritual presence and connection to whenua.
