Maahaki

"From Seed to Self, From Self to Whanau"

From Te Kore, the void of infinite potential, came Te Po — the deep night of gestation and becoming. From this sacred darkness emerged Te Ao Marama — the world of light, the realm of being. It was from Te Kurawaka, the sacred red earth humanity's seed was first planted — nurtured by ancestral hands, it unfurled toward the dawn. And as breath stirred form, the life force declared itself: Tihei Mauri Ora! — the sneeze of life, the cry of existence.

Maahaki is the essence of balance — a gentle strength that holds the space between all things. It is the quiet dignity of being grounded in who you are, and the grace to honour the mana of others. It recognises that we thrive not in isolation, but through shared wisdom, reciprocal care, and deep connection — with one another, and with te taiao, the natural world.

Maahaki is not loud, but it is powerful. It is Maori Pride expressed with humility and reverence — knowing where you have come from, standing firm in that knowing, and moving forward in harmony with all that surrounds you. It is collective strength, ancestral memory, and present awareness interwoven into action.

In living maahaki, we honour the sacred cycle: from potential to being, from being to belonging. It is the heart of whanaungatanga, the root of manaakitanga, and the path back to kotahitanga — unity.

‘Maahaki (niu series)’ by B. Waipuka-Callander – a digital artwork reflecting Māori values of humility, balance, and collective strength, honouring the quiet power of grace in action.
